3242) Word for Word

Max McLean (1953- ) is a stage actor, writer, and producer.  I first heard of him in 2009 when he received national acclaim for his performance of Mark’s Gospel.  This awardwinning stage production consisted of nothing more than Max McLean reciting the entire Gospel of Mark on stage.  There are no other actors in the 94-minute performance, and the stage has no props other than a few places to sit.  Yet, his dramatic word-for-word recitation was a huge hit, loved by both audiences and critics.

McLean received even wider recognition for his screen adaptation of C. S. Lewis’s classic Screwtape Letters, an imaginary collection of letters from an older, more experienced demon/tempter, to a novice tempter on how to ensure the damnation of a certain Englishman.

In 2021 McLean’s organization, the Fellowship for Performing Arts, produced the full-length movie The Most Reluctant Convert: The Untold Story of C. S. Lewis.  The movie tells the story of Lewis’s unhappy childhood, grief, service in the first World War, loss of faith, and, his unlikely return to faith.  McLean plays the older Lewis in this life story of one of my favorite authors.  The movie is available on Amazon Prime.  Here is the trailer:

McLean has also been involved in stage productions of Genesis, Martin Luther on Trial, and other C. S. Lewis books and stories.  He has also narrated audio productions of four different translations of the entire Bible.  When I listen to the Bible, I listen to his audio version of the New International Version at:

The Fellowship of Performing Arts is a New York-based company that McLean started.  FPA produces films and stage productions from a Christian worldview.

That is all for today’s meditation.  I encourage you to take the time to watch the Mark’s Gospel.  There is no need to watch it all at once.  Make it a part of your devotions for the next few days, watching a chapter or two a day.  It provides an entirely different, and meaningful, way to experience God’s Word.

Matthew 4:4  —  Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Mark 1:14-15  —  After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.  “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”

Romans 1:17  —   Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

God of mercy, amid all the changing words of each generation, speak to us your eternal Word that does not change.  As we hear your Word, fill us with your Spirit.  Soften our hearts that we may delight in your presence.  Sharpen our minds that we may discern your truth.  Shape our will that we may desire your ways.  In Jesus name.  Amen.
